It began with a simple visit to a village, near Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, that ended up changing the way I look at clothes and at women’s work. I met Jaya Didi there, an educated, cheerful woman who welcomed me like family. As we spoke, she told me how she had learnt stitching and embroidery when she was young, the way many girls do, so she could be “well prepared” for marriage. After marriage, those skills just sat quietly in a corner of her life while her days were spent taking care of home and family.
Listening to her, I realized she was not alone. So many women know how to stitch, design, and create, but don’t get the chance to use that talent in a meaningful way. It isn’t always strict families that hold them back; often, it’s simply that no one saying, “Show the world what you can do.” That thought stayed with me even after I returned home.
The next morning, she came to see me with a small gift: a kurta she had stitched herself, in a design she created just for me. It did not look like anything I had bought online, even after ordering so many outfits over the years. It felt original, personal, and full of heart. She had noticed what I wore the previous day and chose colors and patterns to match my nature. In that moment, I could see how much quiet brilliance lives in women like her.
That is where this journey started: with one kurta, one smile, and one woman who just needed a chance. Today, this space exists to honor women like her, to bring you clothing handcrafted by her, where your comfort comes before show, and where every purchase helps a woman feel seen, respected, and financially independent. UTSARIKA is not only a brand but a medium to empower those women with a real smile and confident shine in their eyes.
